Main indications for hyaluronidase treatment
Relative indications (planned aesthetic treatments)
- Correction of unwanted filler results – asymmetry, lumps, excess product
- The “show-through” effect – filler injected too superficially is visible through the skin
- Unsatisfactory appearance – the patient wants to change the aesthetic result
- Preparation for another treatment – removal of filler before new treatment
Absolute indications (urgent medical interventions)
In some rare cases, hyaluronidase is administered immediately to prevent serious complications:
- Necrosis of the skin and subcutaneous tissue – threatened tissue death
- Visual disturbances – e.g. impaired vision, loss of sight
- Severe allergic reaction
- Vascular complications – embolism, circulatory disturbances
In these situations, the treatment is performed immediately, without an allergy test.
How does hyaluronidase work?
Hyaluronidase is a natural enzyme that hydrolyses (breaks down) the bonds in the hyaluronic acid molecule. As a result, the filler dissolves quickly and is naturally metabolised by the body.
The effects are usually visible within 30–60 minutes, and the filler is fully dissolved within a few days.
Important: Hyaluronidase dissolves ONLY hyaluronic acid-based fillers. It does not work on products based on calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid or fat.
What does the treatment involve?
Step 1: Allergy test
Before a planned treatment, the doctor performs an allergy test – a small amount of hyaluronidase is injected in the forearm area and the doctor observes whether an adverse reaction occurs. People allergic to the venom of hymenopteran insects are particularly at risk of allergy.
A short wait: 15–30 minutes of observation
If there are no allergic symptoms, we proceed to the treatment itself.
Assessment of indications and exclusion of contraindications
Application of anaesthetic cream to the treatment area
Cleansing and disinfection of the treatment area
Precise injection with a fine needle into the areas containing filler
Gentle massage to distribute the enzyme evenly
After the treatment, you can return to your daily activities straight away (following the recommendations).
Follow-up visit
The doctor recommends a follow-up visit after 2 weeks to assess how well the filler has dissolved. If needed, an additional dose of the enzyme can be administered.
What to do after the treatment?
- Avoid strenuous physical exercise for 24–48 hours
- Do not massage the treated area firmly (unless the doctor recommends it)
- Use gentle skincare and regenerating creams
- Avoid saunas, swimming pools and strong sun for a few days
- If swelling occurs, apply cold compresses
Normal symptoms after the treatment (2–7 days): redness, swelling, minor bruising. These are temporary.

Yes, it is possible. That is why we perform an allergy test 15–30 minutes before the treatment. Allergies to the venom of hymenopteran insects carry a particular risk. Tell the doctor if you have such allergies.
Yes, you can return to work on the same day. However, because of possible redness and swelling, some patients prefer to take a day off until the symptoms subside.
