Marek Marciniak, MD, PhD

I obtained my diploma from the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical Academy in Wrocław on 7.09.1982.

On 1.10.1982 I started work at the Department and Clinic of Thoracic Surgery of the Medical Academy in Wrocław, initially as a trainee assistant. From 1.10.1983 to 28.02.1986 I continued working as an assistant, and from March 1986 to October 1991 as a senior assistant. On 1 November 1991 I was appointed assistant professor. From February 2010 to August 2022 I worked at the Department and Clinic of Thoracic Surgery of Wroclaw Medical University as a senior lecturer. In the academic year 1996/1997 I served as assistant professor for teaching. On 1 December 1996 I was appointed deputy head of department. From 1 February 1998 to 30 September 1999 I was acting Head of the Department and Clinic of Thoracic Surgery of the Medical Academy in Wrocław. During that time I was a member of the Polish Thoracic Surgeons Club. From 1999 to 2012 I was Deputy Head of the Wrocław Thoracic Surgery Centre. On 25.09.2012 the Rector of Wroclaw Medical University appointed me acting Head of the Department and Clinic of Thoracic Surgery for the period from 1.10.2012 to 30.09.2013.

From November 1983 to August 2022 I worked in the thoracic surgery department of the Lower Silesian Centre of Lung Diseases. From 2000 to 2008 I was vice-president of the board of the Association for the Development of the Wrocław Thoracic Surgery Centre (WOT).

From 1.02.2013 to 1.10.2020 I was Head of the Thoracic Surgery Department of the Wrocław Thoracic Surgery Centre.

From 2015 to 2022 I was a member of the Board of the Polish Thoracic Surgeons Club.

From November 2014 to December 2022 I was the Provincial Consultant in thoracic surgery for the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.

From 1991 to 1995 I was a consultant to the pulmonology centres in Głuchołazy and Gorzów Wielkopolski. From 1998 I was a thoracic surgery consultant to the Independent Public Specialist Centre for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases “Wysoka Łąka” in Kowary. Since January 2003 I have been a thoracic surgery consultant to the non-public healthcare facility Izera Centre of Pulmonology and Chemotherapy in Szklarska Poręba; from March 2005 to December 2020 I was a surgical consultant to the Lower Silesian Centre for Cellular Transplantation with the National Bone Marrow Donor Bank, and from 1 June 2009 to December 2022 I was a thoracic surgery consultant to the Provincial Hospital (SP ZOZ) in Jelenia Góra, known since 2011, after its merger with the hospital in Kowary, as the Provincial Hospital Centre of the Jelenia Góra Valley.

On 6.11.1985 I obtained first-degree specialisation in general surgery. On 5.12.1989, after passing the required examinations, I obtained second-degree specialisation in thoracic surgery.

After the public defence of my doctoral dissertation entitled “Bronchopleural fistula: causes and evaluation of the effectiveness of various treatment methods” and after passing the prescribed examinations, on 31.05.1989, by resolution of the Council of the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical Academy in Wrocław, I was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences in surgery. I presented the results of my doctoral research at international surgical congresses: the 20th Scientific Meeting of the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery (Bonn, 1991), the 2nd European Congress of Surgery – “Eurochirurgia” 92 (Brussels, 1992) and the 28th World Congress of the International College of Surgeons (Cairo, 1992).

I am a member of the Polish Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, founded in 2001, which continues the traditions of the Section of Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery of the Association of Polish Surgeons. I am a member of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons. I taught regular and elective classes in thoracic surgery to fifth- and sixth-year students of the Faculty of Medicine of Wroclaw Medical University. In 2013-2014 I taught third-year Emergency Medical Services students at the Faculty of Health Sciences of Wroclaw Medical University.

My research output comprises 192 papers published in Polish and international literature. 9 publications appeared in journals on the Philadelphia List. The total Impact Factor (IF) for full papers is 11.55. The total number of ministerial points for 72 publications is 388.5 KBN (State Committee for Scientific Research) points. I have recorded 16 citations of 9 of my papers: 13 in Polish literature and 3 in international literature. I am the author or co-author of 13 chapters in 5 books. The book “Surgery”, volumes 1-2, edited by Prof. W. Noszczyk, won the main prize in the Atena 2006 competition for the best academic book. I am a co-editor of the book “Lung Cancer”, published in 2010.

I have taken part in 214 meetings, scientific and training conferences, symposia and continuing education courses (144 in Poland and 70 abroad), at which 229 papers authored or co-authored by me were presented. The most important of these are

I led (5) or was a member of teams (19) carrying out research projects as part of the university's own work funded by the State Committee for Scientific Research (18) or carried out as part of the statutory activity (5) of the Department and Clinic of Thoracic Surgery of the Medical Academy in Wrocław, as well as 1 project funded directly by the KBN. I carried out 2 central research and development programmes (CPBR): no. 11.9 (“methods of indirect determination of total lung capacity TLC and residual volume RV”) and no. 11.4 – 48 (“lung cancer”), as well as the Ministry of Health programme MZ-XV (“combating the consequences of injuries”). In total I carried out 31 research projects.

In May 1986 I completed a research placement at the surgical clinics of the “Carl Gustav Carus” Medical Academy in Dresden and at the Centre for Thoracic Surgery and Lung Diseases in Coswig (Germany). In May 1987 I attended a continuing education course organised by the Medical Centre of Postgraduate Education and the Institute of Tuberculosis in Warsaw on “Advances in the treatment of chest injuries and pleural empyema”. In November 1988 I studied the achievements and work organisation of the Clinic of Thoracic Surgery of the University of Halle – Wittenberg, headed by Prof. H. Neef.

On 20.05.1989 I attended the 7th Scientific Conference organised by the University of Naples on “Pathology of lung diseases”. On 16.11.1991 I took part in a round-table symposium in Kiel on “The spleen and the immune system”, giving a lecture entitled “Clinical evaluation of the effect of adjuvant therapy with spleen hydrolysate on the postoperative course of patients with lung cancer”. I took part in the 1st Joint Scientific Meeting of the German, Austrian and Swiss Societies for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery, held in February 1992 in Bonn . In March 1993 I completed, in Lublin, the 1st Course in Video-Assisted Thoracoscopy and Mechanical Suturing of the Visceral Synthesis Section of the Association of Polish Surgeons. On 18-20.11.1993 I attended, in Heidelberg , the 2nd Scientific Meeting of the German Society for Thoracic Surgery, at which I became one of the founders of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons. On 25-26.11.1994 I attended the 3rd Meeting of the German Society for Thoracic Surgery, held in Munich. With a foreign scholarship for 1995 awarded by the scholarship committee of the “Polish Journal of Surgery” Foundation, in September-October 1995 I completed a research and training placement at the Thoracic Surgery Clinic in Heidelberg (Germany), headed by the internationally renowned surgeon Prof. I. Vogt-Moykopf. I was a member of the organising committee of the 26th Meeting of the Section of Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery of the Association of Polish Surgeons, which was held on 11-13 September 1996 in Wrocław to mark the Section's 45th anniversary. I chaired one of the scientific sessions of that meeting. I was a member of the organising committee of the 5th Meeting of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons, held in September 1997 in Wrocław. I was on the organising committee of the 8th International Congress of Thoracic Surgery, which took place in Wrocław in May 2000. In December 1998 I completed a continuing education course in cryosurgery. In November 1999 I completed a one-month research and training placement at the Clinic of Thoracic and Vascular Surgery in Hanover (Klinikum Hannover/Heidehaus). In May 2002 I attended the 9th International Congress of German Thoracic Surgeons ( Coswig/Radebeul ). On 19-26.04.2001 (Alanya, Turkey) and 10-17.10.2002 (Crete, Greece) I took part in the 2nd and 4th Conferences of Paediatricians and Family Physicians. I took part in the “VATS MASTERCLASS” continuing education course organised by the TYCO HEALTHCARE group in April 2007 in Elancourt (France). From 2001 to 2007 I actively participated in 6 consecutive international Polish-Ukrainian thoracic surgery conferences “Wrocław – Lviv”. In March 2011 I attended the School of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons ( Antalya, Turkey ). In June 2012 ( Cardiff, Wales ) I took part in the “VATS Lobectomy Masterclass” course, with the participation of the world-renowned American thoracic surgeon Dr Robert McKenna, organised by Cardiff University. I was a member of the organising committee of the 1st Meeting of the Polish Society of Ambulatory Medicine and Surgery and the 4th Meeting of the Union of Polish Surgical Societies, held in Wrocław on 8-9 November 2002. In November 2004 I co-organised an international symposium to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first successful opening of the chest performed in Wrocław. I was Vice-Chair of the Organising Committee of the 3rd Congress of the Polish Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, held in Wrocław on 18-20 May 2006. In October 2009 I was the Administrative Head of the course “Lung cancer and other thoracic tumours” from the list of the Medical Centre of Postgraduate Education (CMKP). In 2014 I completed VATS lobectomy training, “VATS Lobectomy Clinical Immersion”, in Copenhagen. In 2017 I took part in training courses in minimally invasive surgery: 1. “International VATS training course” organised at Tongji University Shanghai 2. “Minimally invasive thoracic surgery course – uniportal program” at the University of A Coruña. In 2017 and 2018 I took part in the 2nd and 3rd international training on advances in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer: “EMEA Lung cancer management summit” (Lisbon, Strasbourg ). In 2019, together with representatives of the team of the Wrocław Thoracic Surgery Centre and the Lower Silesian Centre of Lung Diseases, I completed a placement at the University Hospital in Bristol as part of the ERAS ( Enhanced Recovery After Surgery ) project. The project concerned improving perioperative care for patients treated surgically for lung cancer.

I actively took part in 6 scientific and training meetings of the Lower Silesian Branch of the Association of Polish Surgeons, 10 meetings of the Wrocław Branch and 5 of the Opole Branch of the Polish Society of Phthisiology and Pneumonology, and 5 “Pulmonology Days” training conferences in Jelenia Góra. I gave 2 lectures as part of the Lower Silesian Science Festival, 7 lectures on specialisation courses from the CMKP list and 12 on training courses organised by the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Postgraduate Medical Education of the Medical Academy in Wrocław and the Lower Silesian Medical Chamber.

In 1984 I received an individual award from the Rector of the Medical Academy in Wrocław “For important and creative achievements in teaching and organisational work”, in 1992 a second-degree individual award “For important and creative achievements in research work”, and in 2007 a team award “For important and creative achievements in teaching and organisational work”. In 2010 I received from the Director of the Lower Silesian Centre of Lung Diseases a certificate of recognition for surgical activity and the resulting revenue earned by the Centre under its contract with the NFZ (Polish National Health Fund). In 2010 the President of the Republic of Poland, Bronisław Komorowski, awarded me the Silver Medal for Long Service.

In 1993-1996 and 1998-1999 I was a member of the Council of the Faculty of Postgraduate Medical Education of the Silesian Piasts Medical Academy in Wrocław. In the academic year 1996/1997 I sat on 3 Dean's Committees for filling the posts of heads of departments and clinics of the Medical Academy. In the academic years 2002/2003, 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 I took part in the work of the Rector's Social and Housing Committee and of teams for developing a concept for the operation of rehabilitation and the endoscopic diagnostics laboratory in the New Medical Academy (NAM), and for promoting the commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the death of J. Mikulicz-Radecki and the 60th anniversary of the Polish academic centre in Wrocław. As part of the recruitment for doctoral studies at the Medical Academy in Wrocław for the academic year 2006/2007, as the representative of the Dean of the Faculty of Postgraduate Medical Education, I took part in the work of the examination committee for the subject: thoracic surgery.

I supervised the specialist training of 4 doctors in thoracic surgery. I sat 4 times on the practical examination committee in thoracic surgery. I supervised 2 master's theses and reviewed 4 others at the Faculty of Health Sciences of Wroclaw Medical University. I supervised 1 bachelor's thesis.
