Karisma - what the treatment is, who it is for, results and price in Wrocław

Karisma is one of the newer tissue biostimulators, and my patients ask about it more and more often. In short, it is a treatment that improves the quality, density and firmness of the skin by stimulating it to produce its own collagen. In this article I explain, from a practitioner's perspective, what exactly the Karisma treatment is, how it works, who it is for, how it is performed, what results you can expect and how much it costs in Wrocław.

What is the Karisma treatment?

Karisma is an aesthetic medicine treatment belonging to the group of tissue biostimulators. The product introduced into the skin combines recombinant collagen with hyaluronic acid. In my practice in Wrocław, I perform the Karisma treatment for people who want to improve the condition of their skin without changing their facial features - Karisma is not used to add volume, but to rebuild the quality and density of the skin.

It is worth clearing up the most common misunderstanding straight away. A classic hyaluronic acid filler works mechanically: it restores volume and smooths a specific wrinkle immediately after injection. A biostimulator such as Karisma works differently - “from within”. It provides the skin with building material and a signal to regenerate, and the visible improvement is the result of the skin's own work, which is why it develops gradually over the following weeks.

What does the product contain?

The product used in the Karisma treatment combines three main ingredients, each with a different role. It is this combination that makes Karisma work as a biostimulator that improves skin quality, rather than as a classic volumising filler.

Recombinant collagen

Recombinant collagen is obtained biotechnologically, without sourcing it from animals - which limits the risk of reactions to animal-derived proteins and contaminants. Collagen is the main structural protein of the skin: it is responsible for its firmness, elasticity and thickness. With age, its production decreases and the existing fibres become fragmented, which leads to a loss of skin density and firmness [2]. Studies on injectable recombinant collagen indicate a beneficial effect on signs of skin photoageing [4].

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin's extracellular matrix that binds water and maintains hydration and elasticity. Its content in the skin decreases with age, which contributes to dryness and loss of firmness [1]. In the product, high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin and creates an environment that supports the work of fibroblasts - the cells responsible for collagen synthesis.

Carboxymethylcellulose

Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is a biodegradable polymer that acts as a carrier in injectable products - it forms a gel matrix that keeps the other ingredients at the injection site and influences hydration and the mechanical stability of the tissue [5]. In studies on biostimulators, CMC is sometimes used as a carrier for active particles and shows good biocompatibility [5]. As a result, the ingredients of the product exert their effect gradually, at the injection site.

This combination means that Karisma is chosen both to improve the quality of facial skin and for delicate areas such as the neck, décolletage and hands.

How does the Karisma biostimulator work?

To understand the mechanism, you need to look at what happens to the skin with age. Fibroblasts - the cells that produce collagen and elastin - work more and more slowly, and the existing collagen fibres become fragmented. This is one of the main causes of the loss of firmness, tension and density of the skin [2]. The result is a complexion that looks thinner, less elastic and more tired.

The product used in the Karisma treatment works in two ways. On the one hand, it supplies the skin with ready-made collagen; on the other, it stimulates fibroblasts to increase the synthesis of their own extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. This biostimulating effect is well described in the literature: products in this group stimulate the biosynthesis of type I and III collagen [3], and injectable forms of recombinant collagen have a beneficial effect on signs of skin photoageing [4]. This is why the effect of Karisma builds up at the pace of the skin's natural regeneration, rather than “instantly”.

Who is the Karisma treatment for? Indications

Karisma works well for people who notice the first signs of ageing or want to refresh their skin comprehensively. In my practice, the most common indications for the Karisma treatment are:

• loss of firmness, tension and density of the facial skin;
• fine lines and a tired, “dull” complexion;
• the need to improve the quality of the skin on the neck, décolletage and hands;
• dehydrated skin in need of deep hydration;
• anti-ageing prevention for people over 30;
• a wish for a natural effect without adding volume.

However, Karisma is not a solution to every problem. If the aim is to fill a deep fold or contour the lips, other treatments will be more appropriate. The final assessment of suitability always takes place during the consultation, at which I assess the condition of the skin and set realistic goals.

How should you prepare for the treatment?

Preparation is simple. For a few days before the treatment, it is advisable to avoid alcohol as well as medicines and supplements that increase the risk of haematomas (e.g. products containing acetylsalicylic acid - after consulting your treating doctor). On the day of the treatment, the skin should be healthy, without active infections or irritation. You should inform the doctor about all medicines you take and any chronic conditions during the assessment.

How is the Karisma treatment performed in Wrocław?

The Karisma treatment usually takes 30 to 45 minutes and is carried out in several stages:

• Consultation and assessment. Skin assessment, medical history and agreeing a plan.
• Cleansing and anaesthesia. Make-up removal and local anaesthesia with a cream.
• Injection of the product. Application using the mesotherapy technique or the linear retrograde technique, with a needle or a cannula.
• Post-treatment care. A soothing product and aftercare instructions.

Aftercare instructions

Karisma is a treatment with a short recovery period - you can usually return to everyday activities the same day. For a few days after the treatment, I recommend avoiding intense exercise, saunas and swimming pools, not exposing the skin to the sun or sunbeds, and using a cream with SPF. For the first 24 hours it is better not to touch or massage the injection sites, and to skip make-up on the day of the treatment.

Results of the Karisma treatment and how long they last

The first effects - better hydration and a rested appearance - may be visible after about 3 weeks, and the full result develops after 8–12 weeks, once the skin has rebuilt collagen. The effects last approximately 12 to 18 months, although this varies from person to person - it depends on age, lifestyle and the initial condition of the skin. Safety and contraindications

When performed by a doctor, Karisma has a good safety profile. Immediately after the injection, temporary reactions may occur: slight swelling, redness or small pinpoint haematomas, which usually resolve within a few days. Contraindications include, among others, pregnancy and breastfeeding, active infections or inflammatory skin conditions, autoimmune diseases during a flare-up, blood clotting disorders, a tendency to form keloids and hypersensitivity to the ingredients of the product.
