Do stretch mark creams work? What the research says

Published · Updated

“Will this cream really remove my stretch marks?” - I hear this question very often. The honest answer is: for most creams and oils the evidence of effectiveness is limited and inconclusive, and they do not “remove” stretch marks [1][2]. Some ingredients have moderate support for prevention, but once stretch marks are already there, procedural methods are more effective. Below I break it down point by point - without the marketing.

What creams promise and what the research says

The market for cosmetics “for stretch marks” is huge, but the quality of the evidence behind it has not kept up. Scientific reviews consistently emphasise that strong evidence is lacking for most topical products, and many studies were small and of low quality [2]. In other words: advertising usually runs ahead of science.

What has some support in research

  • Centella asiatica, hyaluronic acid, daily massage - in prevention (in pregnant women) they have shown some moderate signals of effectiveness; massaging the area on its own may also matter [3].
  • Tretinoin (a prescription retinoid) - on fresh, red stretch marks it can bring a noticeable improvement (in studies up to about 47%), but it irritates the skin and is contraindicated in pregnancy [2][3]. It is a medicine, not a cosmetic - used under medical supervision.
  • Silicone gels - they are sometimes used, as with scars, but the published results are difficult to interpret unambiguously [1].

What works poorly or not at all

Popular oils (e.g. olive oil) did not produce a statistically significant difference in controlled studies [3]. Ordinary emollients and over-the-counter cosmeceuticals are widely used despite the lack of clear evidence that they actually reduce stretch marks [2]. The hardest to improve with creams are old, white stretch marks - these are mature scars.

When a cream makes sense. As part of skin care and prevention (moisturising, massage), and also as a complement to - not a replacement for - procedural treatment. However, do not expect a cosmetic to “erase” existing stretch marks.

What works better than creams

Once stretch marks are already there, the most effective options are procedural methods that stimulate the skin to remodel. In studies, fractional lasers usually achieve a 50-75% improvement in the treated stretch marks [3] - much more than a typical cream. At MM Clinic we reduce stretch marks with a fractional CO2 laser; what the treatment involves, how much it costs and what its contraindications are is described on the laser stretch mark treatment in Wrocław page. It is also worth knowing that the stage of the stretch marks matters - more on this in the post red and white stretch marks.

An honest look at the results

No method - neither a cream nor a laser - removes stretch marks completely, because they are scars [1]. The aim is to clearly reduce their visibility. A cream can support the skin, but a real improvement in existing stretch marks is easier to achieve with procedural methods selected individually.

Do stretch mark creams really work?

For most creams and oils, the evidence is limited and inconclusive. They do not “remove” stretch marks. Some ingredients have moderate support for prevention, but for existing stretch marks procedural methods are more effective.

Which ingredients have any supporting evidence?

Centella asiatica, hyaluronic acid and massage show some moderate signals (prevention). Tretinoin (a prescription retinoid) improves fresh stretch marks, but it irritates the skin and is contraindicated in pregnancy.

Does oil (e.g. olive oil) help with stretch marks?

In controlled studies, oils did not produce a statistically significant difference. They can moisturise the skin, but you should not expect them to remove stretch marks.

Can a cream deal with old, white stretch marks?

This is the hardest case. White stretch marks are mature scars and respond poorly to cosmetics. Procedural methods, e.g. a fractional laser, are more effective.

What works better than creams?

Procedural methods that stimulate the skin to remodel. In studies, fractional lasers usually achieve a 50-75% improvement in the treated stretch marks. The result varies from person to person, and stretch marks cannot be removed completely.
