Lip contouring is today one of the most frequently performed aesthetic medicine treatments, but for someone facing it for the first time it can still be a source of uncertainty. Concerns usually relate to the same issues: will it hurt, will the lips look “artificial”, how long will the effect last and what if the result does not meet expectations. The answers below are meant to help you make a calm, informed decision - in them I have gathered what patients ask about most often during consultations.

1. What does lip contouring with hyaluronic acid involve?

Lip contouring involves the precise injection of cross-linked hyaluronic acid into the vermilion of the lips and the area around the mouth. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the skin that binds water and builds tissue volume ^[2]. As a result, the lips gain a fuller shape, a better contour and hydration. In aesthetic medicine, hyaluronic acid is the main product used for lip augmentation and lip contouring ^[1].

Importantly, an initial effect is visible immediately after the treatment, but the final result is assessed after anywhere from a few days to around two weeks, once the swelling has subsided. The two terms are close, but not identical. Augmentation focuses on adding volume, while contouring also includes correcting the shape, evening out asymmetry and improving the proportions of the lips in relation to the face. 3. Does lip contouring hurt?

This is one of the most common questions before a first treatment. Before the injection we apply an anaesthetic cream, and many products additionally contain an anaesthetic, which improves comfort. Most patients describe the sensation as slight discomfort rather than pain. Sensitivity is, however, individual and depends, among other things, on the injection area and on how sensitive you are on the day. If you are afraid of pain, tell the doctor - the anaesthetic can be left to work for longer, or the doctor can work more slowly, with smaller amounts.

4. What does the treatment look like step by step?

The visit proceeds calmly and in stages:

1. Consultation and assessment of the shape of the lips and facial proportions

3. Disinfection of the treatment area
4. Precise injection of hyaluronic acid with a needle or cannula
5. Shaping and assessment of symmetry
6. Aftercare instructions

7. Will there be bruising and swelling after the treatment?

Slight swelling and minor bruising are a natural reaction of the tissue to the injection. Swelling usually subsides within 2–7 days, and the final effect is assessed after 7–10 days. Swelling, bruising and tenderness are the most frequently described mild and transient reactions after hyaluronic acid filler injections ^[3]. That is why it is better not to schedule your first treatment just before an important event - it is worth allowing yourself 1–2 weeks' leeway so that your lips have time to take on their final shape. Following the aftercare instructions (cooling in the first few hours, avoiding the sauna and intense exercise) helps shorten recovery.

8. What are the contraindications to the treatment?

The most important contraindications include, among others:

• Pregnancy and breastfeeding
• Active autoimmune diseases

• Cancer and uncontrolled diabetes
