Fractional facial rejuvenation - how does the laser work and what results does it give?

Published · Updated

The face is the area of the body most often treated with anti-ageing procedures. It is on the face that the effects of skin ageing are most clearly visible - loss of elasticity, wrinkles, dryness and pigmentation. Patients try to reverse these processes with the help of advances in aesthetic medicine. Rejuvenating treatments using a fractional laser are becoming increasingly popular around the world. How does this device work, and does it actually deliver the desired results?

What is fractional facial rejuvenation?

Fractional facial rejuvenation is a treatment performed with a fractional CO2 laser. The way it works involves a certain paradox - to trigger the skin's regenerative processes, controlled micro-injuries first have to be made in it.

The laser beams create microcolumns on the surface of the skin that reach into its deeper layers. Selective photothermolysis is possible thanks to correctly chosen laser parameters (e.g. wavelength, pulse intensity). The body's natural response to this situation is to start repair processes. Because the injured areas are surrounded by healthy tissue, fibroblasts increase their production of elastin and collagen. These are the substances that form the main building blocks of the collagen and elastin fibres on which the elasticity and firmness of the skin depend.

This method is widely used in aesthetic medicine. It can reduce the visibility of wrinkles, stretch marks and acne scars. More and more patients are also choosing the laser as part of anti-ageing therapy, using it instead of far more invasive surgical methods.

What results does fractional facial rejuvenation give?

The effectiveness of fractional facial rejuvenation depends on the individual predispositions of the patient. The best results are achieved with several treatments carried out 4-5 weeks apart. And although you have to wait a while for the expected effect - which is a natural consequence of the skin's regenerative processes - it is worth being patient, as the rejuvenated appearance of the face lasts a very long time.

The main results of fractional facial rejuvenation include:

  • reduced visibility of wrinkles, nasolabial folds and acne scars,
  • a more even skin tone - removal of age spots, pigmentation and sun damage,
  • a radiant, refreshed look,
  • increased skin density, firmness and elasticity,
  • improved hydration,
  • a lifted facial contour,
  • improvement in the overall condition of the skin.

Results appear at different times after the treatment. The skin starts to peel after just 2-3 days. Then, within a week or two of complete healing, improved firmness and a more even skin texture become visible. The effects of collagen fibre activity, such as increased skin density and firmness, are usually seen 3-6 months after the procedure.

Your skin needs care after fractional facial rejuvenation

The effectiveness of the treatment depends to a large extent on how the skin is cared for afterwards. You should therefore avoid sunbathing, hot baths and strenuous physical activity. Use gentle moisturising creams and follow your doctor's instructions, which may be individual for each patient.

Ageing of the facial skin is a natural process that can be slowed down with aesthetic medicine treatments. Find out more about the fractional laser treatment and the full list of pre- and post-treatment recommendations by clicking here: fractional facial rejuvenation - Wrocław.
